The controversy surrounding alleged scam by Maharashtra Housing Minister Prakash Mehta continued to rock the monsoon session of Maharashtra Legislature for the third consecutive day.
The issue dominated the proceedings in both the houses as opposition members aggressively demanded Mehta’s ouster.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has already ordered an inquiry into the alleged SRA scam in South Mumbai’s Tardeo area.
Mehta is accused of granting an additional Floor Space Index (FSI) to a private developer by violating rules. It is alleged that the minister through his act may have benefitted the builder to the tune of Rs 500 crores. Documents show that Mehta had appraised the CM of the decision, however, Mehta himself denied it on the floor of the house.
Opposition members gathered in the well of the Maharashtra assembly shouting slogans against the housing minister. A banner reading ‘Prakash Mehta ka Ulta Chashma’ was displayed in the house by opposition members. The banner also read ‘I misguided the Chief Minister, but I won’t resign’.
“How can a free and fair probe take place if the minister is in the chair? He has to resign first. The bureaucrat- politician-builder nexus should be exposed,” demanded former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavhan.
The house was adjourned four times before finally being adjourned for the day. The upper House also witnessed fireworks over the demand for the resignation of Mehta. “We will not allow the house to run until Mehta resigns,” said leader of Opposition in the legislative council, Dhananjay Munde. The council was also adjourned for the day.
Mehta, however, remains defiant. ” I have said whatever I had to say on the floor of the house. I am open for any probe. This government would not run on the demands made by the opposition,” Mehta said.
